Ancient Greece
Today in class we took notes on the Ancient Greece PowerPoint. The notes that I took today were that the world's great civilizations are all located on water (especially rivers). Egypt had the Nile River, Mesopotamia had the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, India had the Indus River, and China had the Huang He River. Greece is a mountainous peninsula. Some of the key places that will need to know are the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Adriatic Sea (which is just north of the Ionian Sea), Peloponnesus, Athens, Sparta, Crete, Asia Minor, and Macedonia. There are approximately 2000 islands in the Ionian and Aegean Seas. This combination is what shaped Greece's culture. Due to their geographic location, were many skilled sailors and shipbuilders. Greece had poor/limited natural resources, so they relied on trading. It was difficult to unite the Ancient Greeks because of the terrain. They developed small, independent communities (city-states), and that's who they were loyal to, Although fertile valleys cover one-quarter of the peninsula, only about 20% is suitable for farming. The Greek diet consists of grains, grapes, olives, and fish. Their lack of resources most likely led to Greek colonization. Back then, the temperature usually ranged from the mid-40s in the winter to the low 80s in the summer. Although it could get hot in the summer, it was pretty nice year-round. After we took those notes, we had the last 15 minutes left of class to write our blog posts.
