Maps Test

Today in class we had a test on maps. I felt like it was a pretty fair test and we had learned all of the material in class. I felt pretty confident with most of my answers, but there were a few questions that I was unsure of. On the pop quiz I got longitude and latitude mixed up, so I made sure to be extra carfeul with that on the test. The section where I probably did the worst on was the section on absolute and relative location because that is what I studied the least. I couldn't tell if some locations were absolute or neither. The section where I felt most confident was the first page because I feel like we talked about those questions a lot in class, and they were pretty basic questions. I probably could've studied a little more than I did so I could have been surer of myself. Overall I think that I probably got a B on the test.

Mercator vs Peter's Projection Maps

Today in class we were given time to write the differences between the Mercator and Peter's Projection maps. On the Mercator map, Greenland and Africa appear to be the same size, but Peter's Projection map shows us that Africa is actually 14 times larger than Greenland. On the Mercator map, Europe is larger than South America, but South America is 6.9 million square miles and Europe is  3.8 million square miles, and Peter's Projection map accurately shows us that. Mexico is 0.1 million square miles bigger than Alaska, but Alaska is drawn 3 times larger than Mexico on the Mercator map. In the Mercator map, Germany looks like it's in the middle, but it's actually in the northernmost quarter of the earth on Peter's Projection map. The Roman Empire

- Rome's increasing wealth and expanding boundaries brought many serious problems such as discontent among the lower classes of society and a breakdown in military order; these problems lead to the republic - The rich started buying large farm estates which made it hard for smaller farmers to compete making a lot of them jobless and homeless - Two tribune brothers named Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus tried to help Rome's poor by proposing reforms as limiting the size of estates and giving land to the poor  - Their helping of the poor gave them lots of enemies which resulted in both of them being killed (Tiberius in 133 BC) (Gaius in 121 BC). - After their deaths, civil war broke out in Rome - In 60 BC military leader Julius Ceasar joined forces with Crassus and Pompey - For the next 10 years, Rome was dominated by these three leaders - They were in a triumvirate: a group of three rulers - Caesar lead  a successful campaign to conquer all of Gaul during 58-50 BC. - Pompey

Letter My Future Self

  Hi, future Alex, this is 16-year-old Alex who is finishing her last days of being a high school freshman. The year is 2020, and a lot of crazy stuff has happened. In the first few months of 2020, there had been a lot of news about an outbreak of coronavirus in China. Before we knew it, the coronavirus was spreading all over the world. At the beginning of March, things were getting worse and everyone started getting worried. The grocery stores started running out of toilet paper and a bunch of other supplies because people were scared. On March 12, the governor made an announcement that all Maryland schools would shut down for 2 weeks. At first, everyone was excited for school to be closed because we thought that things would blow over in a few weeks and we'd be back to normal. The weekend right after school got closed, I went to Arizona for spring break. Things weren't that bad yet, the airport still had a lot of people there and there weren't many people wearing masks.
