9/11 Definitions

Today in class we had to look up the definitions of the Greek terms that were on the board. The definitions are listed below.

 Agora: an ancient Greek meeting place; used for markets and assemblies. The center of athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life in the city/state.

Polis: city-state; political entities ruled by their bodies of citizens. The origin of the words politics, metropolitan, and poll.

The importance of the year 508 BC to the ancient Greeks: Cleisthenes was the leader of the democracy; first democracy in Athens. The first time in recorded history that the people had revolted against their own rulers and took over ever. 

ex: united states (1776), France (1789), China (1851 & 1949)

 Socrates: classical Greek philosopher; one of the founders of Western philosophy.

The death of Socrates: charged with two capital crimes and found guilty, he didn't want to try to escape prison, so he killed himself by drinking hemlock.

The Socratic method: a cooperative argumentative dialogue based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking.

What the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot: a self-centered person who didn't vote or participate in anything relating to their society.

Mr. Schick's Post

Our cyber assignment for today is to write a reflection on the thoughts that Mr. Schick posted on his blog. The Coronavirus has completely changed everyone's current lifestyles and routines making it difficult for a lot of people to adjust to the change. It sucks but there isn't anything anyone can do about it because the situation is out of our control. The best thing that we can do is try to make the best out of the situation and also put effort into our school. Mr. Schick mentioned how students are tempted to look up an answer or ask a friend, which doesn't help you understand what you are learning. 10 point assignment; Demographic Transition

Mr. Schick was out today so we had a sub. He gave us the assignment to watch the three videos that he posted about demographic transition and write three facts that we learned from each video. After we finished writing our facts and watching the videos, we have to write about which video we liked the best and why. Khan Academy Video: 1) The growth rate measures how much the population of a country grows or shrinks over some time period. 2) To figure out the growth rate of a country, you count how many people were added to the population, and how many people were removed. (growth rate = ((current - initial)/initial) x 100) 3) Most countries have positive growth rates because there are economic benefits since children can work to help support the family, the government sometimes provides incentives to families for each child, and religion influences population growth, because it usually promotes large families. Crucible of Civilization Video Pt 1

Today in class we started to watch a video about Ancient Greece called "Crucible of Civilization". Since we had finished all of the notes in the PowerPoint and read all of the important parts in the textbook, we watched a documentary that sums up a lot of things that we just learned.
